How to Design a Playground with Activation Games?
Identifying the Principal Requirements of Users
In designing playgrounds with games for activation, the first step is to identify the target users. In most cases, playgrounds are targeted to children. Therefore, age, interests, and safety are paramount factors. Activat e games need to be engaging and encourage children to be physically active, rather than merely static visual games. For instance, if the playground is located within an Indoor Playground, you need to determine how much area the activation games will occupy. You cannot have the area so large that children cannot run freely, or so small that only a handful can play at a time. In addition, the games should be aligned with the overall theme of the playground. In an Arcade Theme Park, for instance, the activation games can have a retro or gaming style to enhance cohesion of the entire venue.
Choose Enjoyable & Safe Activation Games
When it comes to activation games, safety is our first priority. All activate games and other pieces of arcade game machines must comply with international safety regulations. For example, EN 1176 for Europe and ASTM for North America. No sharp borders, unstable designs, and the materials mustn't be toxic. Plus, the games should also be challenging and fun enough for the kids to be focused. For an Indoor Playground, it can be touch screen interactive games such as collaborative puzzle games, or mini obstacle courses where kids can climb and jump. An Arcade Theme Park can include arcade inspired activation games like mini basketball hoops where kids can shoot to score points, or very simple racing games that use buttons to control. Both set the kids in motion and also spark nostalgia for the parents who used to play them.
Arranging Layout to Enhance Engagement
How you position the activation games and other pieces of equipment considerably impacts the ways children socialize and engage with one another. You don’t want to just shove all the games into one corner. Instead, let the children freely meander and navigate from one activity or game to the other with ease. As you position an Individual Based Activation game, for an Indoor Playground, you can have a group based activation game, like a giant tic tack toe board, placed right in the middle. This allows for the maximum number of children to participate in active play simultaneously. In between the center, smaller games like Individual puzzle puzzle stations can be placed. For an Arcade Theme Park, you can place the activation games in rows, just like in a traditional arcade. This allows children and their guardians to freely walk around and choose the game they would like to engage in next. Also it is important to have ample spacing between each game so children do not feel crowded together and more importantly do not hit each other while playing.
Theme Match
The playground would look attractive if it had a a cohesive theme attracted to it. For example an indoor playground could be designed with a jungle theme. The activation games can be designed with tree buttons or animal targets. In an Arcade Theme Park, the activation games should match the theme. Arcade games used to be made in neon colors. Game machines could be designed in bright neon colors. Game signs can be designed in retro fonts and fake arcade posters could be placed around the games. Activation games which are consistent with the main theme helps the playground look as if it is whole, and not just a disorganized collection of games. Children would enjoy the play experience more and be more willing to spend time playing.
Revising and Adjusting for Improvement
After designing the playground with activation games, it is crucial to conduct a test before the actual opening to the public. Invite a few children and observe them as they try to play with the activation games. Do they find the games easy? Are parts of the games too hard? Are there any safety concerns that you ignored? Taking an example of an activation game in an Indoor Playground: if a lot of children find it hard to touch a button, then that button should be lowered, so it is accessible. Or, in an Arcade Theme Park: if a racing game keeps crashing, then there is a technical problem that must be resolved. After collecting feedback from the test, changes should be made. This way, there playgrounds will be safe for children, and they will enjoy returning again and again.
